Does anyone know where the saying "Meanwhile back at the ranch" originates from?

"I'm an avid reader, and I noted this passage from 1912 which is likely the origin of the phrase "meanwhile, back at the ranch" extracted from Zane Grey's bestseller, 'Riders of the Purple Sage (1912, chapter 6).   BTW, after nearly 100 years, this remains a timeless tale and a great read:"

It appears it was also used in early Radio broadcasts too.

It seems like it was used extensively in Literature, Radio and Movies, it's questionable which was first.

Thanks Boot, I have the book and have read it  along time ago but didn't associate the saying with it so when I get time I'll read it again and see what context it's used in, also could you explain what BTW means in your first post?

I only copied and pasted that quote after googling, I don't use those abbreviations myself and had to google that particular one only last week.
