I dont know about a lot of you but I cant afford a Buffalo Coat. What other fur is acceptable, mink, beaver, astrachan, how about muskrat??

I know that ID store sell buffalo hides for 350 to 750 a pop...but thats way out of my league!!!

I would not recomend anyone attempt to make a buffalo coat. I've owned several and have an idea what's involved. They would be extreamley difficult to make and would require at least two hides. They can often be bought around the £500 mark and whilst this is expensive, it's less than it would cost to ruin two hides trying to make one.

Virtually any fur is acceptable for a coat, I've even seen wombat used, but again it comes down to construction. All small pelts would have to be pieced together first and this in itself would be a huge undertaking.
Unless you have cheap access to furs it would still be cheaper to buy a coat complete.

My advise for a winter coat would be to avoid fur altogether and make one from blanket. It would be just as period correct, much easier to make and only a fraction of the cost.

Boot.

Ive seen a few Beaver coats on Ebay...all correctly made and double breasted with the large round collar...muskrat....wolve...all sorts. I suppose its about correct construction and not so much what fur was used. Ive looked at mink but apparently that wasnt used until towards the end of the 19thc.
