depending on which tribe and who captured you what were the different ways of torture one could expect from the Indians ? staked out in the desert with sticks underneath your eyelids so your eyes are open permanently is one i believe .was there any ritual or significance to different torture techniques ?did the Indians do this to each other as well .? cheers Wyatt

There were many forms of torture and for once some of the stuff shown on the films is not far off the mark;

Some types of torture being ..

Lashed to a wheel and turned upside down with a small fire under your head..

Tying a piece of wet rawhide around your head and around a tree and stretching it tight ...  so when the sun got on it  the rawhide dried and shrank breaking the bones in the head and popping the brains ...

Burying a person up to their neck in hot sand, prying the mouth open with a sharp stick and then running a trail of honey to an ants nest ..

just to name three  ...  !!!

And on the Eastern Frontier...

This is what happened to Col. William Crawford in 1782....(in order...)

Stripped & hands tied & fastened to stake by a 12 foot length(so he can move round it)

Shot with blanks so the burning powder enters the skin

prodded with white hot poles(in the soft ,squidgy bits)

hot coals scattered on the ground he's walking on

scalped(finally !)

hot coals on top of head

remnants were then burnt..............

Another couple of guys had their eyes removed useing cleaning worms on ramrods........

Why did I just have my Breakfast?..................

Steve

Lets remember that when the white man arrived he was offered the hand of friendship by most, and then the whitemans greed took over, the rest is history.

I wonder who the "credible witnesses" were to these events?

On the contrary. But particularly the example above where "the remnants were burned", who saw it and lived to tell the tale?

There does seem to be two trains of thought on this point   ...

Some Indians would not for instance mutilate what they considered to be a brave man, who had been strong in battle before being killed ..  an example being Custer maybe. ..

On the other hand, other indians would mutilate a body also as a sign that the person was a great warrior, their reason for doing so being that he couldnt then still fight them in the afterlife .. an example there being Lt Casper Collins who had a hand hacked off and gunpowder exploded in his mouth among other things.

As for some instances of torture, we have them recorded in the reports of the patrols that found what was left after a raid.

Hay Kate I remember that but am sure the books will be pulled apart on here as there is conflicting so called evidence " There are books and there are books" will be up there in the top ten .

Not  realy enough evidence on the horrific things that both sides did and said in the name of being right !    What would you do to trespassers against you ?
