I think you're right, HA. Plain with a slick of neatsfoot or olive oil. Reenactors think everything should be dark.

I think that the new gear (saddles, holsters, scabbards, belts, saddle pockets etc) was the same yellow/orange/gold/tan colour that our gear is. Older, dirtier gear darkened up with wear like my slim jim in post No 50 or so and for some reason chap legs appear to have often been darker (chrome tanned perhaps) but generally, for our period, I think there's a mite too much dark leather around.

Of course, people may want it that colour to appear aged?
